DECATUR — Arkansas Rural Water will conduct smoke tests on the sewer lines in several Decatur neighborhoods over the next few weeks.
The tests are designed to find cracks or holes in the lines.
Decatur utilities manager James Boston said residents should not be alarmed if they see some smoke coming out of the vent pipes on their roofs or from the plumbing in their houses.
The smoke will be brightly colored — it could be green, red or another easily seen color — and it is nontoxic. If it does show up in a house, residents should open a window for a few minutes, Boston said.
“ If your house works right, it will not smoke, but if it has some issues, it could, ” Boston said. Residents may want to inspect their plumbing if the smoke shows up in their homes.
Arkansas Rural Water conducts the tests at no charge to the city. The city is only required to provide the smoke bombs for the tests.
