Benton County Democrats attend state convention

BENTON COUNTY - Some Benton County residents were among more than 700 Democrats from around the state to attend their party's 2008 state convention in Little Rock on Saturday.

Delegates to the convention elected members to the Democratic Party of Arkansas state committee, adopted the party rules and the party platform, and certified the Democratic candidates for the general election.

Benton County residents elected to the state committee are Lu Burgner, Walter Hinojoisa, Barbara McCoy, Thurman Metcalf, Bill Millager, Myra Moran, Jim Russell and Robbyn Tumey.

Rules-committee members, who been meeting periodically for the past 11 months, suggested several rule changes to be considered by convention delegates. All the changes were adopted in full.

"We (Benton County delegates ) voted for all the changes to strengthen the rules, Benton County Democratic Party Chairwoman Barbara McCoy said.

The newly adopted party rules and party platform will be available on the Democratic Party of Arkansas Web site soon, a Democratic Party of Arkansas press release states.

Following the state convention, the newly elected state committee met to elect Arkansas' Democratic national committeeman and committeewoman. Krystal Thrailkill of Mena was elected as committeewoman, and Don Beavers of North Little Rock was re-elected as committeeman.

Their terms will begin immediately following the Democratic National Convention to be held in Denver on Aug. 25-28.

They will serve through the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
