DECATUR - The first farmers market in Decatur was held July 11 at Veterans Park. Vendors from Decatur and Siloam Springs sold garden vegetables, flowers and sweet corn.
Mai Yang of Decatur stood behind a table filled with cucumbers, herbs, peppers, cherry tomatoes, potatoes and beans. Yang said she has always grown a big garden for her family, but this was her first year to sell vegetables at a farmers market. She also sells her produce at the farmers market in Rogers.
Steve Odom and his daughter, Candice, sold sweet corn out of the back of their pickup truck. Steve said they grow watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, squash and okra to sell at the Siloam Springs Farmers Market. This year, they also planted 20 acres of sweet corn.
The market will be open in Veterans Park every Friday beginning at 7 a. m., and every Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. and throughout the Acoustic Jam on Saturday nights. Vendors selling vegetables, fruit, flowers and fresh eggs are welcome. Fees have been waived for the first year.
