Upward Bound to start summer program

The fifth annual summer Upward Bound program will start Tuesday, said Jerry H. Moore, Upward Bound director.

"We will have about 33 students. This year, focus is on the American West. Teaching for us will be Mr. Joe Brown Thunder of the Lakota Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to teach our students the basic Sioux language."

Free movies will be held Tuesday evenings July 1-29, at the Frisco Stage at First and Elm streets in downtown Rogers. Looney Tunes will start at 8 p. m., with the main movie to follow.

Lewis and Clark Outfitters is teaming up with the city of Eureka Springs for a day of paddling at Lake Leatherwood.

The July 26 event - called the Northwest Arkansas Paddle Festival - is being held in place of Lewis and Clark's annual Beaver Paddle Festival because of high water and flooding in the Beaver area.

There will be kayak and paddling clinics, demonstrations by vendors, games and other activities.

Lewis and Clark Outfitters has stores in Rogers, Fayetteville and Little Rock.

In August, knife enthusiasts, buyers and collectors will gather at the Embassy Suites and the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers for an A. G. Russell Knife event.

There will be a free informal gathering from 7: 30 p.m. to 10: 30 p.m. Aug. 15. A banquet at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 will offer another opportunity to meet knife makers and manufacturers. Banquet tickets are $ 45 and are limited.

On Aug. 16-17, approximately 150 makers of handmade knives and 20 knife manufacturers will display knives and accessories for sale at the Hammons Center.

Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 16, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 17. Admission is $ 10 and covers both days. Scott named to leadership team

Laura Scott of Bentonville was recently selected to be a part of the 2008-2009 Campus Activities Board leadership team at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Scott will be the specialevents coordinator, and will be responsible for planning Casino Night, Alcohol Awareness Week and the CAB Benefit Bash. The Campus Activities Board is the student-led, event-planning organization at UA-Fort Smith.
