BENTONVILLE - Allied Waste, the city's trash provider and the third-largest waste-disposal company in the United States, has been purchased by Republic Services in a $ 6. 07 billion stock deal.

The purchase was announced by both companies this week.

Jennifer Fagan, sales manager for Allied Waste Services of Galena, Kan., gave information on the merger to Bentonville Mayor Bob McCaslin in a memo earlier this week.

Fagan added that the merger is expected to close by the end of the year and is subject to shareholder approval from both companies. Once complete, shareholders of Allied Waste will own 52 percent of the combined company, which will be led by James O'Connor, chairman and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Republic. Allied's Don Slager will become president and chief operating officer, according to a report from the Associated Press.

"In the meantime, we will continue to operate as two independent companies," Fagan wrote.
