DECATUR — All Decatur Barbecue preparations were put on hold at the June 10 Chamber of Commerce meeting until more information about the sale of Peterson Farms is released.

The barbecue is scheduled for Aug. 1.

In the past, Peterson Farms played an active role in helping the Chamber of Commerce with the event.

According to Chamber of Commerce President Royce Johnson, the company has furnished the labor for cooking chicken and provided the paper goods and ice. Peterson Farms also purchased tickets for 4, 000 to 5, 000 chicken dinners to give away to employees.

Johnson said a substantial portion of the Chamber’s funding comes from money raised at the barbecue, and that the Chamber needed more details before organizers can proceed with planning the event. Alternatives — such as having workers from the DARP foundation, a faith-based drug and alcohol rehab program, cook the chicken — were discussed.

In other business, the Chamber tabled a proposal from the city to volunteer time for a possible fireworks stand and display. David Cook proposed a plan to have a fireworks display at Bulldog Days on Oct. 3 and 4 in celebration of Decatur’s 100 th anniversary. The display would cost $ 2, 800. Cook suggested a fireworks stand to raise money to cover the costs. He asked chamber members to volunteer their time to work at the stand.

Pat Austin reported on the Chamber’s donation to Northside Elementary School. She said some trees have already been planted, and more will be on the way this week.

Chamber members voted to donate $ 500 to the Decatur Senior High School Sports Department for uniforms and other needed items.
