BENTONVILLE Jennifer Brummett of Bella Vista was determined to breast-feed, even though she was a first-time mom and gave birth to twins.
On Friday, Brummett was honored as the 2008 WIC Benton County Mother of the Year for breast-feeding her twins the first year of their life.
I was committed to breast-feeding because I wanted the best for the twins, Brummett said. And I knew that breast-feeding was best. My husband was really supportive and that was a big, big help.
The Arkansas Department of Healths WIC program recognizes and celebrates breast-feeding moms for their important contributions to health. Each Arkansas county nominated moms who deserved to be recognized.
Judy Spencer, a nutritionist with the Benton County Health Department, presented Brummett with a plaque and a poster that included her picture with twins Caleb and Colton. Husband C. J. Brummett held one twin, and Brummett held the other during the presentation.
Spencer spoke briefly about the advantages of breast milk for babies.
Human milk is the perfect food, Spencer said. Babies who are breast-fed have less gas, colic and spitting up. They are less likely to develop asthma, food allergies, lymphoma. Breast-fed babies are also less likely to be overweight.
