BENTONVILLE — Bentonville High School students need to check the school fines and fees list if they want to be eligible for test exemptions, two assistant principals warned Wednesday morning.
The advice was given at the final “ Breakfast With the Boss” event. The breakfast events are designed for parents of freshmen to learn what’s about to happen at the school for the upcoming nine-week grading period.
The first breakfast informed parents of the high school’s rules regarding behavior and attendance; the second presented information on test exemptions and semester exams; the third dealt with small-learning communities; and the fourth, held Wednesday, again covered details of the testing schedule and how students can use their exemptions.
“ If they don’t pay (their fines ) by the deadline, they lose their exemptions, ” Assistant Principal Rose Spaulding said.
Assistant Principal Jack Loyd said students need to also make sure their attendance records don’t have any unresolved questions about absences.
Loyd and Spaulding, who oversee the freshman class, said they believe the breakfast program has been a success.
Spaulding said the program “ gets important information to parents who may not be getting it at home. ”
Although school officials call the program a success, they have been disappointed by a low parent turnout. Officials will discuss better ways to inform parents about the upcoming meetings this summer, Loyd said. One way might be to create a ninthgrade Web site that is connected to the BHS main site.
Scott Pitts was the lone parent who attended Wednesday. He said he’s wanted to come to each event, but it hadn’t worked out because of his schedule.
“ We try to stay involved with (my son’s ) school, ” he said. “ Parents need to be more involved and know what’s going on. ”
