BENTONVILLE - It is hard to pass up a free ice cream cone, but it proved the undoing of one Rogers couple.

Elizabeth M. Seieroe, 29, and Steven Roy Seieroe, 22, were in a Bentonville restaurant when employees realized the couple were trying to pay with a stolen check, according to a press release from Bentonville Police Chief James Allen.

The restaurant's personnel managed to call the account holder and determine the check was stolen, then call police. To keep the suspects from leaving, they offered them free ice cream.

When police arrived, Allen reported, the suspects had not yet finished their cones, which could be their last for some time. They were arrested and taken to the Benton County Jail, where they await a bond and probable-cause hearing for forgery in the second degree, a class C felony carrying a penalty of three to 10 years in prison.

Police also matched the couple's vehicle to a description given by the original victim whose check was stolen.
