BENTONVILLE - Crossland Construction Co. was recommended Tuesday to act as construction manager for the building of another juvenile detention center.
During Tuesday's meeting of the Benton County Long Range Planning, Properties and Equipment Committee, Justice of the Peace Frank Winscott informed the committee that Crossland Construction was chosen for the detention-center project.
Winscott, County Judge Gary Black, Juvenile Detention Center Director Dennis Cottrell, and the county's Environmental Services director, Jim Ecker, were appointed to an ad hoc committee to oversee the preliminary stages of planning a new juvenile detention center.
The committee will now select an architecture firm for the project.
Crossland and the architecture firm will then present proposals to the Committee of 13.
The proposals will not include designs of the JDC, Cottrell said.
The long-range planning committee voted to accept the recommendation of Crossland and for both companies to show presentations to the 13 Quorum Court members.
Black said they interviewed several companies and heard fantastic presentations, which made his committee's choice a difficult one.
Winscott hopes to have 80 percent of the architecture work completed on the center in time for next year's budget.
A location for the planned JDC has not been chosen, but one possible location is on county-owned land west of the Benton County Sheriff's Office in Bentonville.
The number of beds for the detention center also has not been determined, but Cottrell said the new facility needs at least 13 beds.
The current JDC is facing overcrowding problems.
In other action, the long-range planning committee approved an ordinance that would require heavy-haul operations to pay the county for damages to roads.
Benton County Health Department Director Loy Bailey also told the committee of two possible sites for health units in Siloam Springs.
The county Health Department lost the lease for the previous health unit in Siloam Springs.
The possible locations are the Wellness Clinic and the building that houses Bell Office Supply.
