JBU speech and debate team places third

SILOAM SPRINGS — The John Brown University speech and debate team secured its highest finish ever at a national tournament, placing third overall at the National Christian College Forensic Invitational held March 7-9 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.
Twenty schools competed in the tournament, including teams from Arkansas, California, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Leading in individual points were junior Rissa Murphy and freshman Amber Wilson. Murphy placed first in Varsity Dramatic Duo with her partner, J. D. Hegenmuhle; second in Varsity Communication Analysis; third in Varsity Prose Interpretation; and fifth in Varsity Program of Oral Interpretation. Wilson secured a first-place finish in Novice Program of Oral Interpretation; first in Novice Prose Interpretation; and second in Novice Poetry Interpretation.
Other individual events points were awarded to the following:
• Second-place Reader’s Theater: Anna Carol Brymer, Scarlett Bush, James Cook, Daniel Fischer, Matt Mellema, Matt Nye, Josh Sooter and Brenna Welch.
• Second-place Novice Program of Oral Interpretation: Cecelia Wells.
• Fifth-place Varsity Communication Analysis: Brad Webber.
• Fifth-place Varsity Dramatic Interpretation: Brad Webber.
• Fifth-place Novice Program of Oral Interpretation: Brenna Welch.
Leading the team in debate points were Novice Parliamentary debate partners Wells and Kyle Macfarlan and partners Brymer and Cook. Both teams advanced to the semifinals.
Also contributing debate points were Aaron Brenner, Bush, Jon Erickson, Fischer, Hegenmuhle, Mellema, Murphy, Nye, Sooter, Jamie Stallings, Webber, Welch and Wilson.
