BENTONVILLE - When summer sessions start for the Bentonville School District's childcare programs, the rates will increase.

The rate changes are part of the new handbooks that were approved Tuesday at the Bentonville School Board's Policy Committee meeting.

All rates went up $ 5 a week, except for the summer Adventure Club rates, which increased by $ 10 a week. The summer Adventure Club runs for a full day instead of a half day and is therefore double the school-year rate, explained Deb Kee, director of early childhood services for the district.

All the new rates will go into effect when the summer programs begin.

In other news, the committee discussed an ongoing topic regarding the district using pre-employment credit checks on candidates for certain positions.

The idea has received some opposition in the district, and there have been concerns about the district potentially acting as "big brother," Superintendent Gary Compton said.

The district's Personnel Committee discussed the issue during its meeting Monday, and members said they didn't think creating a policy regarding the issue was worth pursuing. Several members of the Policy Committee still saw value in such a policy, although they said it needed to be revised. The Policy Committee decided to table the issue for a while before revisiting it later. The proposed policy will probably be addressed at the April 24 board work session.
