School sixth-grade science class will be working on their butterfly garden and planting nectar and host plants, which they are growing in their classroom, ” said Terry Stanfill, senior chemist at the Flint Creek Power Plant and caretaker of the plant’s nature area. “ The host plants we will be planting will, hopefully, attract state butterfly Diana fritillary, monarchs and the rare Baltimore checkerspot, ” he said.
The Bloomfield 4-H Club will work on more flower beds and erect a bat house, Stanfill said. The Cornerstone 4-H Club will plant a food plot with seeds provided by the Game and Fish Acres for Wildlife Program.
The whole group will assist in planting pawpaw trees and wafer ash trees, which are host plants for zebra and giant swallowtail butterflies, Stanfill said.
GENTRY — Preparations are being made for Earth Day at the Eagle Watch Nature area on the west edge of Gentry.
The Gentry Fire Department burned off acres of tall grasses and unwanted vegetation recently to prepare for reseeding of the area in native grasses and wildflowers.
Sixth-grade students from Gentry Middle School spread mulch and prepared ground for planting during Earth Day celebrations in April.
The students have been studying plants in their science classes and have started plants in the classroom that they will transplant to special areas along the nature trail in April, said Terri Swicegood, science teacher at the middle school.
