BENTONVILLE - The Peel Mansion Museum is hosting the 17 winning quilts of the 2007 Rose of Sharon-themed "New Quilts From an Old Favorite"contest. The quilts will be on exhibit through April 28.

This international contest, held annually, challenges quilt-makers to create original quilts based on a specific quilt pattern. Inspired by the traditional pieced Rose of Sharon pattern, the quilt-makers have modified the design in imaginative ways, providing a look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today.

First place was awarded to Helen Remick of Seattle for her quilt "Spinning Out Spinning in 4."

Remick has taken the traditional four-stemmed Rose of Sharon and transformed it into a five-stemmed bouquet that blossoms into a 10-pointed star.

Winning quilts in the exhibit are from Japan, Canada, Australia and the United States.

The Peel Mansion Museum and Heritage Gardens is at 400 S. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville. Peel Mansion hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The cost of the exhibit is $ 2 per person.
