BENTONVILLE — Residents here expecting a Neighborhood Market, the grocery-only chain operated by Wal-Mart, to open near the northwest corner of Arkansas Highway 12 and Southwest I Street by the middle of the year are going to have to wait a little longer. Plans for a Neighborhood Market in the Pinnacle Hills area of Rogers, however, are moving full speed ahead.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Laurie Smalling said the March groundbreaking for a new Neighborhood Market in Bentonville has been delayed, and no new timeline has been set.

“ It’s still our intent to building a Neighborhood Market near Highway 12, but our internal timetables have changed, ” Smalling said. “ There’s just nothing I can say about the timeline for that project that’s set in stone now. ”

The city of Bentonville continues to work on plans for widening and other improvements to both Southwest I Street and Arkansas 12 — which border the area Wal-Mart intends to build on — but Smalling did not confirm that the proposed road work had anything to do with the decision to delay the groundbreaking. Plans approved earlier this year call for a 40, 000-squarefoot Neighborhood Market.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart continues to work its way through the planning process in neighboring Rogers to construct a Neighborhood Market in the Pinnacle Hills area, where it has been confirmed that a Super Target will also be constructed. An exact location for the Rogers Neighborhood Market has not been announced, but Wal-Mart has entered into an agreement with Bill Schwyhart and Robert Thornton for the purchase of property in the Pinnacle Hills area.

“ The developer is in the process of filing with the city (of Rogers ) to start the permitting process, ” Smalling said. “ The official timeline will be determined once the development is through the planning process with the city. ”

Smalling indicated Wal-Mart is moving quickly on the plans.
