BENTONVILLE - A 24-year-old Springdale man is in serious condition at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale after his vehicle crossed the median on Interstate 540 and into the path of a concrete truck at approximately 6: 40 a.m. Wednesday.

According to an accident report filed by the Arkansas State Police, Joshua J. Nugent, 24, of Springdale, was traveling north on I-540, near exit 85, when his Ford F-150 pickup truck crossed through the median and slid sideways into the path of a Mid-Continent Concrete Co. truck driven by Jehiel Walter Middleton, 42, of Sulphur Springs. The concrete truck struck Nugent's vehicle in the passenger side. Nugent's vehicle was knocked into the rear of a Dodge Neon driven by Gary D. Shook, 45, of Pea Ridge, causing minor damage, according to the report.

Nugent's truck and Middleton's concrete truck traveled into the median, causing the concrete truck to turn over on top of the pickup truck, the report states.

Nugent was extricated from the wreckage and taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville by the Bentonville Fire Department. Northwest Medical Center said Nugent was then taken to its Springdale hospital, where he remained in serious condition at presstime.

Middleton received minor cuts and did not seek emergency medical assistance. Shook was not injured, according to the report.

Arkansas State Police Cpl. Marty Pollock said the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed. His initial report indicates light ice had formed on the northbound lanes of I-540, where Nugent was traveling before crossing the median. The Arkansas State Police have not determined whether the icy conditions contributed to the crash.

Traffic on I-540 was restricted to one lane from the time of the crash until approximately 10: 15 a. m., the report states. Traffic was backed up for miles on and around the interstate, with several motorists reporting delays of more than an hour.

The Bentonville and Rogers police and fire departments assisted at the scene.
