BENTON COUNTY - People could volunteer to help the environment and benefit from tax changes in a proposal of hers, U. S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., said The Senate Finance Committee approved Oct. 4 a bipartisan amendment by Lincoln and U. S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, that offers two new tax credits to taxpayers who choose to help the recovery of threatened or endangered species.

The proposal also sets a tax deduction for costs associated with implementing recovery plans, among other provisions.

Under the proposal by Lincoln and Crapo, landowners could opt for tax credits in the amount of cost of improvements to such habitats. They could also get a tax credit to make up for the lost value of their land resulting from habitat protection.

"People do want to provide good land practices, but without the incentive to do it, it is enormously expensive," Lincoln said.

The Finance Committee approved the amendment as part of legislation called the Habitat and Land Conservation Act.
