GENTRY — She is a 2008 Republican candidate for Benton County tax collector, Tracy Sewell says in a news release.

Sewell, 38, is internal auditor for the tax collector’s office, she said in the news release.

Currently, Sewell is the supervisor of the bookkeeping department for the tax collector’s office.

During her six years on the job there, she also served as a financial adviser to the county, and helped to train three previous tax collectors, the news release says.

Sewell has almost 20 years of accounting and bookkeeping experience in various private industry and public entity jobs, and is currently working toward completing a degree in accounting at the University of Arkansas.

“ I come from a family dedicated to public service and I’ve been thinking about running for this position for quite awhile. When I found out our current tax collector does not intend to seek re-election, I knew this was the right time for me, ” she said in the news release.

Accountability, education and information are her top priorities if she’s elected, Sewell says in the news release.

If elected, she would design and install custom software tailored to the tax collector’s office and other county offices where accounting methods are primarily cash basis but which have too much volume for the programs that are currently used, the news release says. It’s time to re-educate the public to better understand the tax collection process and the use of tax dollars, Sewell said in the news release. “ The greatest obstacle the tax collector faces is the public’s lack of education in how taxes are determined and collected. While no amount of education will ever create joy in paying taxes. Once informed of how the process works and where their money is spent most citizens become more accepting of the process, ” she said.

Sewell lives in Gentry with her husband, Gary, and two children.
