BENTONVILLE — About a year ago, some community leaders met to discuss the possibility of establishing a YMCA in Bentonville. The group kicked off a Founders Campaign on Tuesday with a goal of raising community awareness about the organization and $ 600, 000 over the next three years.

“ We’re following the national guidelines recommended by the YMCA, ” board member Don Romoser said. “ So many people in the area have had wonderful experiences with the Y and were disappointed when they learned there’s not one in Bentonville. For those who aren’t familiar with the Y, we hope to let them know more about it.

“ Our financial goal is to raise the funds needed for three years of operation. That’s where the $ 600, 000 figure comes in. After we reach $ 200, 000, we can hire an executive director to develop programs and determine what kind of facility we need here. We’re looking for people to pledge funds and pledge their time. ”

On May 19, a Healthy Kids Day will be held at Memorial Park in Bentonville by the newly created YMCA of Northwest Arkansas. A national program, Healthy Kids Day is supported by YMCAs across the country to promote healthy lifestyles for children and families.

The event is free and will offer games and activities that demonstrate healthy living. Participants can visit with exhibitors to learn more about their products and organizations. In accordance with the YMCA mission, exhibitors will offer healthy choices for mind, body and spirit.

Featured exhibitors will include local sports and athletic organizations, health care providers, local and national businesses, summer camps and other opportunities along with groups wishing to demonstrate their commitment to healthy lifestyles.
