ENTERTAINMENT NOTES : UA music professor to give clarinet recital with colleagues

Nophachai Cholthitchanta, clarinet professor at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, will give a recital with pianist Kristen Harwell and faculty colleagues Janice Yoes, soprano, and Stephen Gates, cello, at 7 p.m. Monday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Fine Arts Building, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
The program: Duo for clarinet and piano, op. 15, by Norbert Burgmuller; Five Songs for soprano and clarinet by David Johnson; Three Romances for clarinet and piano, op. 94, by Robert Schumann; and the Trio for clarinet, cello and piano, op. 114, by Johannes Brahms.

ASU singers The Arkansas State University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will give a concert at 7: 30 p.m. Monday in Riceland Hall, Fowler Center, ASU, 201 Olympic Drive, Jonesboro. The Concert Choir program will include “The Star Spangled Banner” in an arrangement by Lloyd Pfautsch; Ecce Dominus veniet, a double chorus motet by Michael Praetorius; “Paratum cor meum,” a psalm setting by Michael Haydn with a small instrumental ensemble accompaniment; “Ich aber bin elend,” a German a cappella double-chorus motet by Johannes Brahms; “There Will Be Rest” by Frank Ticheli, based on the poetry of Sara Teasdale; “Climbin’ Up the Mountain,” a spiritual by Moses Hogan; and “All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord” by Rene Clausen.
The Chamber Singers will perform madrigals by Orlando di Lasso, Claudio Monteverdi, John Dowland and Thomas Weelkes; carols by John Rutter and Ralph Vaughan Williams; and, with the Concert Choir, “O Sons and Daughters of the King” by Volckmer Leisring.
Dale Miller, director of Choral Activities, and graduate assistant Janet Tullos will conduct; pianist Luca Strazzullo will be the accompanist.

Mouse with moxie Tall Stories’ touring production of The Gruffalo !, a musical adaptation of the award-winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, will be on stage at 6: 30 p.m. Monday at the Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St., Fayetteville.
The story involves a creative mouse who invents a fantastical creature called the Gruffalo to keep at bay a sly fox, a cunning owl and a sneaky snake as she travels through the deep, dark forest, then discovers that the Gruffalo really does exist.
The show is recommended for children 4-10. The performance is part of the center’s Kleenex Kids Series and inaugurates Pajama Night; all youngsters who come wearing pajamas and / or with their favorite stuffed animal will receive a treat.

Elvis is in the building Eddie Miles will bring back his “Salute to Elvis” show — with a nod to the legends of country music — to Murry’s Dinner Playhouse, 6323 Colonel Glenn Road, with performances at 7: 30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12: 30 and 6: 30 p.m. Oct. 12.

A native of Kentucky, Miles now has theaters in his home base of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and Myrtle Beach, S. C. He performed with many of Elvis Presley’s original band members in a week of 2002 shows to help commemorate the 25 th anniversary of Presley’s death.

Blake Tyson, associate professor of percussion at UCA, will be the soloist in Strange Humors by John Mackey, playing the djembe, an hourglassshaped West African drum.
Ricky Brooks conducts, with guest conductor Joseph Missal, director of bands at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, who, as part of a two-day residency at UCA, will also lecture to music education classes and hold a conducting master class for music education majors.

Political murder The Royal Players will stage Mandate for Murder, or Taking a Stab at Politics by Pat Cook, at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 16-18 and 2 p.m. Oct. 12 and 19 at the Royal Theatre, 111 S. The play involves a mayoral election that careens into a comedic whodunit.

There are 16 speaking parts and numerous nonspeaking parts for adults and children. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Brad Storey will direct.
