They say death and taxes are inevitable. Quick. Somebody add New Year’s resolutions. We may break ’em, but we still make ’em.

In that vein, Let’s Talk once again offers a gaggle of suggested NYRs, brought to you with a little help from the news headlines of 2007. Much of it you’ve read here before, but it bears repeating. To remember those who died in 2007 tragedies and forgiving those who embroiled themselves in 2007 scandals. To be love, and therefore attract love to you, rather than trying to force it to come to you. To look to something other than looks, opposite-sex approval, talent, fame and fortune for your value and validation... and not to take a chance on any of the above elevating you above the law.

To rely on natural talent, rather than any chemical enhancements, to make your mark in life.

To avoid any appearance of failure to practice what you preach... and to definitely watch what you say.

To never take human rights for granted.

To approach airline travel (and any other potentially grueling situations, family reunions included ) with the old Boy Scout motto in mind: Be prepared.

To remember that fighting any kind of injustice — racial or otherwise — involves everyday proactivity.

To remember that staying healthy, especially in these days, requires the same. (And if you need to go to rehab, by all means go, go, go. )

To not waste time grieving over a goal you failed to achieve, but rather to determine what direction you were meant to go. You may be very pleasantly surprised / rewarded.

To act on signs that a troubled relative, friend, neighbor, student, classmate or co-worker needs help... rather than having 20 / 20 hindsight once all hell breaks loose.

To keep in mind that the common denominator in your multiple failed relationships or marriages, should you have them, is you.

To never lose sight of your little ones, literally or figuratively.

To let your imagination soar. It may turn you into a best-selling children’s author.

To remember that if it looks too good to be true (and purports to get you rich quickly ), it probably is.

To just let kids be satisfied with a box to play with... after doublechecking the safety of the box, that is.

To count the cost, count the cost, and count the cost again before embarking on any major, life-changing purchases.

To watch whom you take as a sweetheart or spouse, and especially watch whom you put in charge of your children. To not do too much on Second Life (the now-famous online virtual community ) that you wouldn’t do in real life.

To keep up the prayers and support for the U. S. troops before, during and after any deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

To always keep in mind the four fingers pointing back at you, especially if you’re a political candidate. To remember that those less fortunate need your help all the time, not just at Christmas or Thanksgiving.

To create a legacy that will last longer than the average Hollywood marriage, mean more than a politician’s promise and be stronger than the average TV sitcom.

To never let the troubles of this world, or your own shortcomings, get you so down that you can’t get up. It ain’t over ’til God says it’s over. Resolve to e-mail:
