Reed wins Sun Belt award
Posted on Tuesday, January 6, 2009
UALR sophomore forward Chastity Reed was named the Sun Belt Conference's player of the week Monday after bettering her career scoring high twice last week in Sun Belt Conference games.
Reed averaged 33 points and 11.5 rebounds in victories over Louisiana-Monroe and Western Kentucky this week. She has set her career high in points in three consecutive conference games. Reed scored 27 points on Dec. 20 against Arkansas State, 29 points against Louisiana-Monroe last Wednesday and 35 points on Saturday against Western Kentucky.
"Chastity is a unique player. She's got the jump shot, and if you come up on her she's got the quickness to get by you," UALR Coach Joe Foley said. "Hopefully, before long, she'll even be able to post you up a little bit and take you that way. Anytime you have that type of versatility in a player, it makes it awful hard on matchups. She works very hard every day in practice, so she deserves everything she's getting right now."
Reed's 35-point game was the third highest total scored by a UALR women's player. The UALR scoring record of 38 points was set in 1979 by B.J. Higginbotham against Arkansas College (now Lyon College). Jocelyn Love, now a UALR assistant coach, had 36 points against Arkansas State in 2006.
Reed, a 6-1 sophomore from New Orleans, went 29 of 52 (56 percent) from the field this week, adding 10 rebounds against Louisiana-Monroe and 13 rebounds against Western Kentucky.
Reed's 16.5 points per game ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference. She leads the Sun Belt in conference scoring at 30.3 points.
This is the first time Reed has won the award.
UALR junior guard Kim Sitzmann won the award Dec. 9.
