Southside ready for Har-Ber’s best shot
Posted on Thursday, November 27, 2008
If you have ever been in a fight, you know some of the toughest opponents are the ones who keep coming back after being knocked down.
It happens all the time in Class 7 A, where turf battles are fought between 16 teams in two conferences.
Fort Smith Southside (9-2 ) beat Little Rock Catholic for the second time last week, and now the Rebels must beat Springdale Har-Ber (10-2 ) a second time Friday night to advance to the state championship game.
Har-Ber’s only two losses this season came at Southside and Fort Smith Northside, but the Wildcats are returning with confidence after winning on the road last week in Cabot.
Southside had to hold off Har-Ber 27-22 in the team’s first meeting Oct. 24. The Wildcats came fighting back with 22 fourth-quarter points after being down 17-0 early in the second quarter.
Southside knows it will have to play well the entire game Friday night to keep Har-Ber down a second time.
The Rebels started slowly against Catholic last week, then dominated the second half for a 28-17 victory. Daniel McGee turned two highlight film runs into touchdowns of 43 and 57 yards, and the Southside defense kept Catholic out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
Har-Ber is more balanced on offense and much better on defense than Catholic. The Wildcats are worthy of a second shot at Southside, but the Rebels will be left standing again after all the blows have been exchanged Friday.
