Posted on Sunday, August 3, 2008
Rachel Perez of Maumelle won the inaugural Arkansas Scratch Bowlers Tour Ladies tournament, rolling qualifying games of 215, 300, 197 (712, her 82 nd 700 ) and 279 for a 4-game 991 block total.
“I think the first tournament for women was a success thanks to Greg and Sandy O’Neal for running it, and Gordon Childers for hosting it. I hope that it will continue to grow. I know there are more women out there that can play,” Perez said. “As far as my bowling goes, I think I had a good day. My rhythm was good, and when I hit those pairs that gave me a good shot, I took advantage of them.
“ The competition was tough. I could have lost several times. I think we all had a good time. Finally, someone is trying to do something for women, and we all just need to support it. I had three nice breaks in the 300. We were laughing and counting. You have to have some luck to pull you through those nerves, but overall, I threw it well. I used the Cell ball by Roto Grip the whole time.”
Perez defeated Tabetha Thomas of Crossett, 201-154, and Manda Moore of Sherwood 227-224, before Dee Dee Jeffery of Newport sent Perez to the losers bracket, 200-185.
Jeffery had victories over Jennifer DeGroodt of Sherwood, 239-212, and Stacy Heath of Benton, 184-170.
Perez faced DeGroodt in the losers bracket with the match ending in a 212 tie. In the one ball rolloff, Perez struck and DeGroodt knocked down eight pins.
This brought about a rematch between Perez and Jeffery, with Perez needing to win two games. She won the first game 217-181. The next game, Jeffery could not carry the 10-pin, leaving the 10 the first ball the 10 th frame to lose 222-206.
