GOLF Landry rolls to Palmetto triumph Arkansas’ Andrew Landry posted a final-round 74 to win the 33 rd annual Palmetto Amateur, finishing five shots ahead of second-place finisher Zack Sucher. Landry finished the event with a 1-under-par 279 at the par-70, 6, 713-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S. C. Landry, a Groves, Texas, native and the only player to finish the tournament under par, entered the final round with a six-shot lead over Ben Martin and Thomas Todd. Landry shot 68 and 67 during the second and third rounds, respectively. His 3-under-par 67 in the third round featured six birdies. Landry just completed his junior season at Arkansas in which he was named a PING honorable mention All-American and a second-team All-SEC honoree for the second consecutive year. Landry led the team with a 72. 83 scoring average and seven top-10 results. He finished the season ranked No. 50 in the Golfweek / Sagarin Performance Index. Little Rock’s Carpenter wins Texas junior Alex Carpenter of Little Rock shot an even-par 286 to capture the boys championship flight title at the 52 nd annual Texas-Oklahoma Junior Golf Tournament at the Wind Creek Golf Course in Wichita Falls, Texas. Carpenter defeated Kyle McCartan of Plano, Texas, by two strokes Carpenter started the final day of the four-day tournament with a fivestroke lead and survived five bogeys in the final nine holes. Adam Carpenter, Alex’s twin brother, finished 16 shots behind his brother at 302. Luke Carpenter tied for sixth in the boys’ 16 division. BASKETBALL Catholic standout to join Scots John Ukadike, a 6-3 guard from Little Rock Catholic High School, has signed a letter of intent to play for Lyon College. Ukadike led Catholic to the 7 A state championship, the school’s first in 78 years, and was named the state tournament MVP. In his senior season, Ukadike averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists per game and was named all-state, all-conference and All-Metro.

BASEBALL UALR showdown set The second Rockets Summer Showdown begins at UALR today concludes Sunday with the championship game at 3 p. m. at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. It will be the first game not involving the Arkansas Travelers at the ballpark, which opened last year. The tournament field includes 18 teams from five states and features some of the top high school talent in Arkansas. Participating teams include Fayetteville, Springdale Har-Ber, Conway, Little Rock Catholic, Central Arkansas Christian and Pulaski Academy. ACADEMICS UCA athletes on Southland honor roll Seventy-four Central Arkansas athletes were named to the 2008 Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday. UCA had the fourth highest total of honorees. The Bears’ baseball team had the most honorees with 19, followed by the women’s track and field team with 14 and the softball team with 10. All nine members of the women’s tennis squad made the honor roll.

FISHING Youth clinic features top anglers Anglers from the Bassmaster Elite Series will hold a youth fishing and conservation clinic Monday at Academy Sports and Outdoors on West Markham Street. In conjunction with the Under Armour College Bass National Championship, which will be held July 9-11 at Lake Maumelle, the youth fishing clinic, dubbed “Anglers of Tomorrow,” will run from 4: 30-6 p. m. and will be open to children ages 7 and older.
