FOOTBALL Winston reportedly withdraws commitment Helena-West Helena Central cornerback Darius Winston withdrew his commitment to Arkansas on Friday and will reopen his recruitment, according to his uncle Buck Willie. Winston, 6-0, 175 pounds, 4. 38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, made a nonbinding oral commitment to the Razorbacks in early February and is considered to be one of the top cornerback prospects in the nation. Willie said Winston is still considering Arkansas but named Michigan as his leader.

— Richard Davenport Harding players honored Harding University senior left guard Ross Conn and junior all-purpose player Zac Ross have been named to the Lindy’s College Football Magazine 2008 All-Division II Second Team. Conn, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., has started all 31 games of his Harding career. Ross, from Kansas City, Mo., played at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, punt returner and kickoff returner. His 1, 520 all-purpose yards ranked third in the Gulf South Conference. GOLF Harding’s Swindle earns academic honor Harding University’s Taren Swindle was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team on Thursday. Swindle became the first Lady Bisons golfer, and only the second Harding golfer, to earn Academic All-America honors. Swindle, a native of Paragould, led Harding with an 86. 3 stroke average. She is a psychology and vocational ministry major with a 4. 00 grade-point average. BASKETBALL ASU women add guard Quinishia McDowell, a 5-8 guard from Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, La., will play for the Arkansas State women’s team next season, ASU Coach Brian Boyer announced. McDowell averaged 15 points, 5. 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3. 5 steals a game as a high school senior.

FISHING McClelland 3 rd in Kentucky tournament Mike McClelland of Bella Vista weighed in a five-fish limit of 16 pounds, 1 ounce Friday and is in third place after the second day of the Bassmaster Elite Series Bluegrass Brawl on Kentucky Lake at Gilbertsville, Ky. McClelland has a two-day total of 39-7. Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., leads the professional standings at 46-6. Hot Springs’ Stephen Browning and Little Rock’s Scott Rook also advanced to today’s third round as the field was cut to the top 50 anglers after Friday’s weigh-in. Browning is 38 th at 31-8, and Rook is 44 th at 30-10.
