BASKETBALL Arkansas’ Sanchez shoots well in China Arkansas redshirt freshman forward Michael Sanchez has shot 80 percent from the field (8 of 10 ) in the first two games with Reach USA’s team that is touring China and playing local pro teams. Sanchez, from Springdale Har-Ber High School, is averaging 8. 0 points and 5. 5 rebounds. In a 78-78 tie against Shan Dong on Thursday, Sanchez had 6 points and 2 rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting. As Reach USA prepared for overtime with the game tied, the team was informed it was a friendly game and there would be no extra period. Shan Dong Gold beat Reach USA 68-67 in the opening game of the tour Wednesday. Sanchez had 10 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out and was 5 of 6 from the field. Reach USA is scheduled to play six more exhibition games.
SOFTBALL Paul Eells game returns The third annual Paul Eells Stars-N-Strikes Celebrity Softball Game, presented by Western Hills United Methodist Church will be held Saturday at UALR’s Gary Hogan Field. Former Arkansas Razorbacks participating in the game include: Coach Ken Hatfield, Joe Dean Davenport, JJ Meadors, John Engskov and Ernie Murry. We also have All-Americans Tony Cherico, Bruce Lahay, Cliff Powell, Greg Kolenda, Bobby Crockett, James Rouse, Loyd Phillips, Anthony Lucas and Ronnie Caveness. Media personalities include: Wally Hall, Shawn Arnell, Matt Mosler, Wess Moore, Chris Givens, David Raath, Aaron Nolan, Mark Edwards, and Jim Harris. Arkansas personalities coming are Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin, Gary Hogan Jr., Andy Pearson and Justin Pickens. Also joining us will be former major league baseball players Tim Jones and Kevin McReynolds. Razorbacks basketball play-by-play announcer Mike Nail, along with KATV’s Steve Sullivan, will be doing the play-by-play for the game. Gates open at noon and the first pitch will be at 1 p. m. All proceeds of the game go to the Paul Eells Foundation. Tickets are $ 10 for adults and $ 5 for kids. GOLF Arkansas tied for 19 th Arkansas finished the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at 20-over-par 304 at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio, and is tied for 19 th. Arkansas junior Jason Turner shot a 3-over par 74 and is tied for 24 th. Wake Forest leads the team competition at 6-over-par 290. Brandan Gielow of Wake Forrest leads individuals at 2-under 69. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships.
SOCCER Mount St. Mary’s Hardin honored Mount St. Mary senior Mary Pat Hardin was named the Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Hardin had seven goals and four assists to help lead Mount St. Mary to Class 7 A state soccer championship.
