Frisco (Texas ) Wakeland quarterback Will Secord made an oral commitment to Arkansas about a month ago but made it public Saturday.
Secord, 6-2, 204, 4. 66 seconds in the 40-yard dash, took an unofficial visit to Arkansas on March 8 and committed to the Hogs shortly afterward.
Will’s father, Marty, who is the head coach at Wakeland, said his son decided to commit once he received a scholarship offer.
“There’s a lot of positives,” Marty Secord said. “He came home feeling good about it, and we received a letter stating they were offering.
“ That’s a great first offer from a SEC school and the state of Arkansas, which is a tremendous football state. Everybody there is excited about being a Razorback and you get caught up in that spirit, so Will went ahead and made his commitment.”
Secord, a left-hander, led the Class 3 A Wolverines to a 9-2 record last season. He completed 147 of 248 passes for 2, 019 yards and 23 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions in his first year as a starter. He spilt time with another quarterback and played in all 10 games as a sophomore.
“I got to sit down with Coach [Bobby ] Petrino and talk about the offense and the quarterback in the system,” Secord said. “I really liked their facilities and liked what they’re going to do for the future.”
Secord also received interest from Kansas, Oklahoma State, Texas, Tech, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and Purdue.
The Secords also returned to Fayetteville to watch some of spring practice and were impressed with the pace of practice.
“The intensity of practices and how they work really stood out to me,” he said. “They never waste a rep, they never waste time. They get to where they need to in a hurry. I really liked that a lot.”
Secord, who is listed on ESPN’s 150 watch list, said he is mobile in the pocket and makes good decisions.
“I think I can move around pretty well,” said Secord, whose family has a farm in Warren. “I have a pretty good arm. I try to be smart with the football and not make too many turnovers.”
Secord is Arkansas’ fourth commitment for the 2009 class.
