NATIONAL LEAGUE : Webb beats Phillies to remain perfect after 8 starts

The Associated Press PHOENIX — Brandon Webb became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts in three years, tossing his 13 th career complete game to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Thursday. The 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in his first complete game of the year. He hit one batter. Webb (8-0 ) became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts since Jon Garland of the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and the first in the NL since Pedro Martinez for the Montreal Expos in 1997. Webb stifled the Phillies on 3 hits through 8 innings before allowing 2 runs and 3 hits in the ninth. Philadelphia’s first-inning run was unearned.
Manager Bob Melvin came to the mound after the Phillies scored two runs in the ninth and had a runner on first with one out. Geoff Jenkins then lined one off the pitcher’s glove that Webb turned into a game-ending double play.
Chris Young hit a two-run home run and Chris Snyder had a two-run double for the Diamondbacks, who split a fourgame series with Philadelphia. ROCKIES 9, CARDINALS 3 Matt Holliday had four singles, Omar Quintanilla added a career-high three hits, Garrett Atkins had a double, triple and two RBI and Jorge De La Rosa (1-1 ), who was making his second start for Colorado since being acquired April 30 from the Class AAA Omaha, gave up 2 runs and 5 hits with 5 strikeouts in 5 2 / 3 innings against visiting St. Louis. The Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse (3-2 ) allowed 7 runs and 8 hits in 4 innings and Ryan Ludwick hit two home runs. Albert Pujols had a single in the sixth, running his streak of reaching base to 36 consecutive games. MARLINS 7, BREWERS 2 Matt Treanor achieved a career high in RBI with a three-run home run as host Florida won its fourth consecutive, including a three-game sweep of Milwaukee, which has lost six in a row. The Brewers finished 1-5 in the season series against Florida. NATIONALS 8, ASTROS 3 John Lannan (3-3 ) allowed seven hits in six innings as visiting Washington ended Houston’s five-game winning streak overall and eight-game winning streak at Minute Maid Park. PIRATES 5, GIANTS 4 Adam LaRoche hit a goahead single in a three-run seventh as host Pittsburgh overcame a 4-2 deficit and beat San Francisco for a three-game sweep. Pittsburgh has won 13 of its past 15 games against San Francisco and swept threegame series from the Giants in three consecutive seasons, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. San Francisco has lost four in a row overall. BRAVES 5, PADRES 4 Matt Diaz hit a basesloaded single in the ninth as Atlanta, which trailed 4-1, got its sixth consecutive victory at home and handed San Diego its fourth loss in a row. Yunel Escobar led off with a bunt single off Joe Thatcher (0-4 ). Chipper Jones followed with a single to left. After the runners advanced on Mark Teixeira’s groundout, Thatcher issued an intentional walk to Jeff Francoeur, loading the bases. Diaz then lined a 2-2 pitch to left to drive in Escobar.
American League ORIOLES 4, ROYALS 1 Daniel Cabrera (3-1 ) threw a three-hitter, struck out seven and walked one in his fifth career complete game to improve to 4-0 in seven career starts against host Kansas City as Baltimore ended a five-game losing streak. Nick Markakis hit a three-run home run. The Royals have lost three of their past four. WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 2 Juan Uribe hit a goahead two-run home run in the fifth as host Chicago beat Minnesota for just its second victory in nine games in nine games. Jermaine Dye led off with his sixth home run to cut the Twins’ lead to 2-1. One out later, Joe Crede, in a 5-for-34 slump, doubled. Uribe, who was 10 for 56, hit his third home run. RED SOX 5, TIGERS 1 Josh Beckett (4-2 ) got eight strikeouts, including the 1, 000 th of his career, and gave up six hits and a run in seven innings as Boston beat host Detroit. The Red Sox took 3 of 4 in the series from the Tigers and have won six of their past seven, while Detroit has lost 6 of 7. YANKEES 6, INDIANS 3 Mike Mussina (5-3 ) won his fourth consecutive start and earned his 255 th career victory as host New York beat Cleveland, which had won five consecutive on the road. RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 3 Dioner Navarro hit a grand slam in the 13 th after Carl Crawford drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly as Tampa Bay beat host Toronto for the sixth time in seven games.
