FOOTBALL Dacus nears deal with Chiefs Former Arkansas linebacker Weston Dacus has been invited to the next Kansas City Chiefs minicamp on May 15, and appears on the verge of signing a free-agent deal with the Chiefs, he said Saturday. Dacus completed a two-day minicamp on Saturday that featured three practices, including scrimmages on Friday and Saturday. “I had real good practices and a good scrimmage [Saturday ],” Dacus said. “It was a heck of a workout after you’ve been out of [live hitting ] for four months.” Dacus said his agent, Storm Kirschenbaum, was negotiating with the Chiefs and hoped to have a free-agent agreement completed early this week. Dacus, of Searcy, ranked second on the Razorbacks with 102 tackles last season. He is working as a middle linebacker for the Chiefs.
— Tom Murphy SOFTBALL Arkansas Tech gets tournament victory Arkansas Tech posted a 4-1 victory over Valdosta State on Saturday, keeping the Golden Suns undefeated in the double-elimination Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss. Taylor Gates hit a fourth-inning home run for Arkansas Tech (40-15 ) and later hit an RBI double in the sixth inning. UCA swept in Arlington Central Arkansas dropped both games of a doubleheader to Texas-Arlington on Saturday, falling 7-0 and 6-1. UCA (6-42, 4-24 Southland Conference ) gave up five runs in the sixth inning of the second game. Whitney Simpson and Samantha Churnical both hit home runs for Texas-Arlington and two more runs scored on a Central Arkansas error. TRACK AND FIELD
UALR’s Atkins sets record UALR sophomore Kirby Atkins set a stadium record and school career record in the discus during the Arkansas State Dual Meet on Saturday in Jonesboro. Atkins won the discus with a throw of 55. 96 meters (183 feet, 7 inches ), improving on his previous personal best of 53. 71 (176-2 ). UALR’s Pepper Foster won the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 12. 29, and Darrell Moore placed fifth in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 52. 9.
