UA athletic director Long Monday’s Tip-Off speaker Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long will be the guest speaker at the Downtown Tip-Off Club’s luncheon at 11: 30 a. m. Monday at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock. In addition to hearing from Jeff Long, the Tip-Off Club will honor Shekinna Stricklin of Morrilton High School and Fred Gulley of Fayetteville High School as its Arvest players of the week. The luncheon is cost is $ 15 for members and $ 20 for non-members. Reservations are encouraged. SOCCER UALR coach resigns UALR women’s coach Greg Hess has resigned for what the school described as personal reasons. Little Rock television station KATV-TV, Channel 7, reported Thursday that Hess is facing drunken driving charges after crashing his sport utility vehicle. The station said Hess faces charges of driving while intoxicated, and also was charged with reckless driving, hit and run, disorderly conduct and obstruction of government operations. Hess has been UALR’s coach since 2001. Assistant Melissa Dennis will serve as interim coach. TRACK AND FIELD Arkansas hosts Last Chance Meet tonight No. 8 Arkansas will hold the Last Chance Meet on Friday at the Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks have only triple jumper Nkosinza Balumbu guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Indoors Championship on March 14-15 at the same site. Today’s meet is the last opportunity to get qualifying marks for the national meet. The meet is free to the public. Field events are scheduled to begin at 2 p. m. with running events beginning at 3 p. m. Among the Razorbacks scheduled to compete are J-Mee Samuels in the 60-meter dash, Chris Bilbrew and Alex McClary in the 800 and Micky Cobrin in the mile. The Razorbacks will also run a distance medley relay team. Many of the Razorbacks competing have provisional qualifying marks but, generally, only the top 16 competitors earn a spot at nationals. BASKETBALL UA-Fort Smith moves into semifinals Four players scored at least 10 points each as the top-seeded University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Lady Lions beat No. 4 seed Western Oklahoma State College 90-45 on Thursday in the first round of the NJCAA Region II tournament in Shawnee, Okla. UAFS (29-1 ) won its 17 th consecutive game and advanced to the semifinals, where it will play Northeastern (Okla. ) A&M or Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa at 1 p. m. Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Noble Complex. Sophomore forward Katorra Lewis led the Lady Lions with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tanisha Smith added 13 points and 8 rebounds, freshman guard Vasha Sanders 11 points and 6 rebounds and sophomore Elisa Shoate 10 points and 5 rebounds. UAFS forced Western Oklahoma into 31 turnovers and scored 37 points off of them. Lambuth eliminates Lyon women Lambuth defeated Lyon College 67-53 Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the TranSouth Conference Tournament in Jackson, Tenn. K. K. Hodges led Lyon (18-13 ) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Rebeca Whorton added 11 points and April Carter scored 10. Lambuth’s Chytearra Kintchen scored 25 points. WRESTLING 4 from Northwest Arkansas place in meet Four girls from Northwest Arkansas earned medals last weekend at the United States Wrestling Association girls tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Emma Kirk, 9, a third-grader at Westwood Elementary in Springdale, took first place in the 85-pound weight division, while Alexandria Kirk, 7, a second-grader at Westwood, finished fourth in the 65-pound division. Katie Peterson, 11, a sixth-grader at J. O. Kelly Middle School in Springdale, finished fourth in the 100-pound division, and Stephanie Owens, 16, a 10 th-grader at Bentonville High School, placed fourth in the 130-pound division. All four girls, who are coached by Gerry Kirk of Springdale, plan to compete in the inaugural USA Girls Wrestling Nationals in Oklahoma City, Okla.

FISHING Tournament rescheduled The Arkansas Couples Bass Tournament scheduled for Sunday at Greers Ferry Lake has been rescheduled for March 16. BASEBALL Lyon wins at home Brian Carr and Nick Salahub combined to pitch a three-hit shutout and lead Lyon College to a 3-0 victory over Eureka College on Thursday in Batesville. Garry Richards and Andy Schatzley had the only two hits for Lyon (14-4 ). MOTOR SPORTS Batesville modified event postponed The 12 th annual Mid-America Modified Championship, slated to be held Thursday-Saturday nights at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, has been postponed by the prospect of inclement weather. The event has been rescheduled for March 27-29.
