No surprise: Southwest to field 11
HOT SPRINGS — As expected, Monday’s $ 250, 000 Grade III Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park drew 11 3-yearolds.
Probable favorite Turf War is scheduled to break from post 5 under Calvin Borel and carry equal top weight of 119 pounds.
In his last start, Turf War dead-heated for victory in the $ 1 million Grade III Delta Jackpot Stakes on Dec. 7 at Delta Downs in Louisiana.
The remainder of the field for the 1-mile Southwest from the rail out: Silver Edition, Joe Bravo to ride, 115 pounds; He’s Eze, Luis Quinonez, 119; Liberty Bull, Eddie Razo, 119; Sacred Journey, Julien Leparoux, 117; Sierra Sunset, Chris Emigh, 119; Isabull, Tim Doocy, 115; Denis of Cork, Robby Albarado, 117; Gangbuster, Kirk LeBlanc, 115; Riley Tucker, Kent Desormeaux, 115; and Royal Hudson, Richard Hamel, 119. Rulings upheld Two stewards’ rulings concerning the $ 50, 000 Dixie Belle Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Jan. 26 have been unanimously upheld by the Arkansas State Racing Commission.
After a 45-minute hearing Saturday morning, the commission voted 4-0 to uphold Rated Fiesty’s disqualification from first to third and a threeday suspension given to her rider, Luis Quinonez. Attorney Larry Honeycutt of Hot Springs, representing Quinonez and Heiligbrodt Racing Stable — co-owner of Rated Fiesty — said both cases obably would be appealed to Garland County Circuit Court, but not heard until after the Oaklawn meeting ends April 12. Stewards disqualified Rated Fiesty for coming in slightly near the eighth pole and forcing Palanka City to check. Palanka City, the original third-place finisher, was placed second after a stewards’ inquiry and a foul claim by her jockey,
igh. Quinonez, Oaklawn’s leading jockey last year, was originally suspended three racing days (Feb. 1-Feb. 3 ) for careless riding in the Dixie Belle but continues to ride through a stay. Final furlong Deputy Too was euthanized after breaking down in Saturday’s 10 th race, according to Oaklawn officials. Deputy Too’s jockey, Chris Emigh, complained of body soreness and a bruised knee after being thrown to the ground, but plans to ride today. … Defending training champion Steve Asmussen began Saturday with 3, 992 career victories, according to Equibase, racing’s official data-gathering organization. … Euphony, a 3-year-old Forest Wildcat filly who fell down leaving the paddock before her Jan. 21 career debut, won an entry-level allowance race Saturday to remain unbeaten in two lifetime starts for trainer Donnie K.
