TROY, Ala. — With a chance at redemption, UALR sophomore guard Steven Moore took over.

Moore, who missed three free throws in the final minute, scored on a driving layup at the final buzzer as UALR beat Troy 63-61 before 2, 853 at Trojan Arena on Thursday.

UALR (13-6, 5-3 Sun Belt Conference ) matched last season’s victory total and moved into first place in the West Division.

“It’s tough to get a win, period, in Sun Belt Conference play, much less on the road,” said UALR Coach Steve Shields, who won his 75 th game as head coach. “We had some guys really step up tonight.”

Moore finished with a teamhigh 17 points.

Troy’s O’Darien Bassett tied the game with 4. 6 seconds left as he got past UALR junior guard Brandon Patterson. UALR called a timeout and drew up a play, the same one that worked last December when UALR won at Minnesota.

“Coach said we were going to win it the same way. Same situation, same play-calling,” Moore said.

Junior guard De’Andre Eggins set a screen for Moore and Patterson passed the ball in as Moore looped around the free-throw line and got past Troy’s Michael Vogler.

“I was blessed with a little speed to me. I just got it and just went. I made one little move at halfcourt,” Moore said.

Moore went straight toward the goal as sophomore forward Mike Smith posted up and tried to pin Troy’s Jarvis Acker.

“I was supposed to just sit on my man in the middle. I saw Steve coming all the way,” Smith said. “I just tried to get out of the way.”

Moore never stopped, letting the shot go from the right block of the free throw lane, over the outstretched arm of the 6-6 Acker.
