"I believe momentum creates momentum. When people start to see what we can do on a small scale, they'll get excited about what we want to do."

Rogers museum announces '09 calendar

The Rogers Historical Museum has announced its 2009 calendar of events.

Programs will begin with a free Victorian Valentine craft class for ages 8 and older from 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 7. The class is free, but registration is required by Jan. 30.

The first museum-produced exhibit, "Of Promise and Pain: Life Between the Wars," will run Feb. 21 through Dec. 31. The exhibit will explore life in Rogers during the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. Clothing, household items and agricultural tools will illustrate everyday life between World War I and World War II. The exhibit also will include photographic images from the era and interactive displays.

"Rogers Auto-Biography: An Automotive History of Rogers" will open May 16 and run through Dec. 31. On May 16, the museum will host an automobile-themed family day to celebrate the opening of the exhibit.

The traveling exhibit "1968 in America" will be on display at the museum June 16-Aug. 8. The exhibition features four major themes - the power of idealism, music, the bullet and the press. The exhibit includes photographs, magazine covers, political memorabilia, records and textiles. It was organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

One of the museum's most popular exhibits, "Final Respects: Dealing with Death in the Victorian Era," will return Sept. 5 to Nov. 7. The exhibit explores Victorian mourning customs. On Oct. 30-31, the museum will offer candlelight tours of the Hawkins House in mourning from 7-9 p.m. in conjunction with the exhibit. A special day of programs on the history of funeral practices will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 31. The year will conclude with a free holiday open house from 12:30-4 p.m. Nov. 29 and Victorian Christmas tours of the Hawkins House from Nov. 29 through Jan. 2, 2010. More information is available at www.rogersarkansas. com/museum or by calling (479) 621-1155.
