Eureka Springs group sets 'green' forum

Change is Coming, a group of Eureka Springs environmentalists, will host a forum on community "sustainability" from 1-5 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Eureka Springs Library Annex, 192 Spring St. The event is designed to raise awareness of local environmental groups including Planet Home, the Eureka Springs Outdoor Alliance, Green Jobs and Time Bank. Robert McAfee, a climatologist with the Governor's Commission on Global Warming, will speak about "green collar" jobs and renewable energy. Library hosts police historian's reading

Author Michael Lindsey will read from and sign copies of his book Big Hat Law: Arkansas and Its State Police (1935-2000) at 2 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Fayetteville Public Library. The book chronicles the history of the Arkansas State Police from its inception as the "Arkansas Rangers" to the plan of 1953-55 Gov. Francis Cherry for a "trooper in every county." It is published by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, a department of the Central Arkansas Library System. The event is free and open to the public. City offers Christmas tree recycling

The city of Fayetteville will recycle Christmas trees through Jan. 15 as part of their compost program. Trees can be placed curbside on residents' normal trash and recycling collection day. All trees must be free of plastic bags, stands, decorations, lights and tinsel. No artificial trees will be collected. Trees also will be collected at the city's compost facility, 1708 S. U.S. convention looms for rug hookers

Over 40 rug hookers from throughout the United States will meet for a convention Jan. 18-21 at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs.
