LITTLE ROCK — A startup company at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has received a $ 750, 000 federal grant to develop imaging technology that could be used for national-defense purposes.

The school said UAMS’ Yunjun Wang discovered an imaging method that’s more cost-effective than other methods. That discovery could lead to radiation imaging on a large scale, including the detection of low-level radiation at ports of entry to the United States.

After his discovery, Wang created the company Mesolight, which is a client company of UAMS BioVentures. UAMS provides lab space for Mesolight.

The two-year is grant from the Department of Energy. Wang is collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and the University of Florida at Gainesville.

UAMS BioVentures was formed in 1997 to help researchers get their discoveries into the marketplace.
