EUREKA SPRINGS — Investigators are hoping tests will reveal whether human remains found scattered near a nursing home are those of a 55-year-old woman who disappeared in May.

Arkansas State Police investigator Chad Hipps said that the remains are believed to be that of Penny Sherman, who disappeared from Ridgeview Residential & Assisted Care Center in Eureka Springs.

Hipps said the remains were transported to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock on Tuesday. He said he hopes tests will confirm the identity and determine whether foul play was involved.

“This is being worked like any other homicide,” Hipps said. “I just want to make sure there is nothing suspicious about this death.”

Hipps said the remains were discovered by a real estate agent and a person interested in purchasing property south of the residential center. He said that he was called about the discovery about 2 p. m. Oct. 1.

The investigation began in Carroll County and spread into to Eureka Springs, Hipps said. The remains were found in a wooded area about a half-mile from the center.

Hipps said that pieces of clothing that were found matched a description of the garments Sherman was last seen wearing. Hipps said that the state police, Carroll County sheriff’s office, Eureka Springs police, and other agencies searched the area for two days and collected remains.

Hipps said he expects little progress on the case until the tests are complete.
