100 YEARS AGO August 25, 1908 FAYETTEVILLE — For the first time, it may almost be said, in the history of the industry, the apple crop of Northwest Arkansas is this year a total failure. The conditions this year are said to be worse than have been experienced at any time since the apple raising business reached anything like its present proportions in this territory and it is the first time that there has been anything like a complete failure of the crop for 10 years.

50 YEARS AGO August 25, 1958 Gov. Faubus met last night with legislators from Pulaski and Jefferson counties and outlined a school closing bill he plans to put before the General Assembly tomorrow. Informed sources said the plan would call for state aid funds to follow students who transferred into other school districts not threatened with racial integration. A private school plan also was mentioned. Mr. Faubus called a special session of the General Assembly Saturday to deal with the Little Rock school integration crisis. The session will begin tomorrow morning.

25 YEARS AGO August 25, 1983 The official high temperature for Little Rock reached 100 degrees for the fourth consecutive day, but dropped abruptly into the mid-90 s after 2 p.m. as moisture-laden clouds flirted with the city. For the most part, though, the thundershowers were widely scattered and light in the area as well as across the state as Arkansas’ hot spell continued.

10 YEARS AGO August 25, 1998 Arkansans were shocked to hear President Clinton confess to an affair with Monica Lewinsky, Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday on CNN’s Larry King Live show. Huckabee said some Arkansans are in “a state of denial” because they don’t want to acknowledge that Clinton has disappointed them. Huckabee was one of four panelists to talk with King about Clinton’s address to the nation Aug. 17. He was the only panelist to appear in the Los Angeles studio with King.
