BONANZA — Police were looking for a man who walked into a bank in this town of 514 people south of Fort Smith on Monday morning and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Sebastian County sheriff ’s deputy Lt. Kevin Nickson said a white man estimated to be in his early 20 s walked into the Farmer’s Bank about 10: 30 a. m., placed a small backpack on the counter in front of a teller and demanded money.

The teller told investigators that the robber held his hand to his hip as if grasping a gun in his belt but no weapon was seen.

After the teller handed over money, the man placed the cash in the bag and walked out the door, driving away in a late 1980 s or early 1990 s white single cab, long-bed Chevrolet pickup with an Oklahoma tag.

There were two employees in the bank at the time and no customers, Nickson said. No one was injured.

Police believe the man drove into the bank’s parking lot earlier that day, then left while there was a customer at the bank, Nickson said.

The man drove south on Arkansas 45, and Nickson said officers from several agencies in the area, including Oklahoma, patrolled all the streets leading out of Bonanza.

Nickson described the man as light-haired and clean cut, 5-feet, 9-inches to 5-feet, 11-inches tall, and weighing 165-175 pounds.
