Adoption ballot proposal adds $9,000 in donations

The group promoting a proposed ballot measure to bar unmarried co-habiting couples from adopting or fostering children raised more than $ 9, 000 last month, increasing its total contributions to nearly $ 55, 000, according to its latest report.

Roger and Bobbi Martin of Jacksonville made the largest contribution to the Family Council Action Committee, $ 2, 000, to increase the couple’s contributions to $ 3, 200, the committee reported.

But the committee reported a debt of $ 2, 788. 84 as of July 31 after spending more than $ 6, 000 last month. Its expenses total $ 57, 702. 57.

Jerry Cox, president of the committee, said Monday that it plans to turn in 24, 000 signatures of Arkansas registered voters to the secretary of state’s office Thursday to try to qualify the measure for the Nov. 4 ballot. He said the group would have at least 10, 000 more signatures than the 61, 974 required if the percentage verified from this batch is the same as the percentage verified from the initial 66, 000 submitted.

Another group opposed to a state lottery, Arkansas Committee for Ethics Policy, reported raising $ 6, 881 last month to increase its contributions to $ 30, 677. 52. It spent $ 1, 573. 84 to increase total expenses to $ 6, 070. 03. It reported a cash bal- ance of $ 24, 607. 49 on July 31.

A newly formed group opposed to a state lottery, United Methodists Against Gambling, reported raising $ 510 and spending $ 192. 89 last month, leaving it with a balance of $ 317. 11 at the end of the month.

Earlier this month, the group formed by Lt. Gov. Bill Halter to promote his lottery amendment reported total contributions of $ 522, 917. 24 and total expenses at $ 485, 114. 73, leaving a balance of $ 67, 802. 51 on July 31.

A newly formed group to promote a ballot measure to give the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission authority to issue $ 300 million in bonds to pay for water and sewer projects across the state, reported raising $ 2, 500 and spending nothing last month, leaving it with a balance of $ 2, 500 at the end of the month.

The group is called Arkansans for Clean Water.
