100 YEARS AGO July 27, 1908 In a sermon titled “Our Task and Our Duty in the Crisis,” Dr. John Edenburn bitterly arraigned the liquor interests in Little Rock and the country at the morning services of the First Presbyterian Church, of which he is pastor.
50 YEARS AGO July 27, 1958 The fourth remaining — and senior — former governor of Arkansas told the Democrat last night that he will vote for Gov. Faubus in Tuesday’s primary election. At the same time, Homer M. Adkins took a thinly-veiled jab at three other former governors who have come out openly against Faubus. “The people honored me by electing me to serve two terms as governor. It does not behoove me as a former governor to try to dictate to anyone how they should vote. People are well informed these days and do not need any suggestion from me.” 25 YEARS AGO July 27, 1983 Sheffield Nelson, chairman and chief executive officer of Arkla Inc., “heartily endorsed” Gov. Bill Clinton’s call for a state Public Service Commission investigation into a gas drilling agreement between Arkla and Arkoma Production Company. Nelson told PSC Chairman Robert Johnston in a letter that a PSC study was “the proper and best means of eliminating any concerns” arising from an article The New York Times published Saturday. Johnston has agreed. Nelson said the issue raised “could merit” a PSC evaluation even though the article was “nothing more than a political hatchet job.” 10 YEARS AGO July 27, 1998 WASHINGTON — Facing a critical week in the Monica Lewinsky investigation, the White House said that President Clinton’s lawyers are working with prosecutor Kenneth Starr to avert Clinton’s direct testimony to a grand jury. In a word of warning, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said outright refusal by Clinton to cooperate might be reason enough for Congress to open impeachment proceedings.
