BEEBE — The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved a college curriculum for students who want to be their own bosses.

The entrepreneurship program will debut in eight Arkansas two-year community colleges starting this fall, including Northwest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, where it was designed.

The other seven colleges are: Arkansas State University’s Beebe campus, East Arkansas Community College in Forrest City, North Arkansas College in Harrison, Ouachita Technical College in Malvern, South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado, Southern Arkansas University Tech in Camden and University of Arkansas Community College of Batesville.

The studies will be taught in the colleges’ business departments as an associate of applied science in business management with a major emphasis in entrepreneurship, or as a stand-alone certificate in entrepreneurship.

The consortium of colleges seeking to offer the courses intend to offer the program to students in any academic or vocational-technical disciplines.

The program will teach the basics of starting a business, from legal and financial requirements to skills including how to write a business plan, get loans, set up books and comply with tax laws, hire people, and find resources and support along the way.
