100 YEARS AGO June 8, 1908 LOCKESBURG — The potato movement from Lockesburg has begun and from two to three cars are shipped from there daily. The price throughout the week has been held down to a great extent by the excessive and continuous rain, which has caused many carloads to be put on the market in bad condition. 50 YEARS AGO June 8, 1958 Chancellor Lee Ward of Paragould will have an “official opening” of his campaign for governor Saturday from the front balcony of the Jonesboro Elks Club on the Craighead County courthouse square. This will make him the first of the three major candidates for the Democratic nomination to get his daily campaign grind started. Neither Gov. Faubus nor Chris Finkbeiner has announced his opening day. Judge Ward also disclosed that he will do his campaign traveling in a helicopter. 25 YEARS AGO June 8, 1983 Sheriff Tommy Robinson has told Prosecuting Attorney Wilbur C. “Dub” Bentley that some of Robinson’s deputies hated Bentley enough to kill him, Bentley said. Robinson Tuesday denied ever saying that, but did say that he and some of his deputies “despise” Bentley. Bentley said Robinson made the statement in the courthouse coffee shop Friday afternoon when Robinson sat at table where Bentley was eating his lunch alone. 10 YEARS AGO June 8, 1998 Trying to reach as many potential voters as possible, Winston Bryant and Blanche Lincoln plan to fly around the state today in preparation for Tuesday’s Democratic runoff for the U. S. Senate. Bryant and Lincoln are scheduled to visit several of the same cities, but at different times, in hopes of raising voter turnout above the dismal 10 percent predicted by the office of Secretary of State Sharon Priest.
