May 24, 1908 CLARENDON — The search for the bodies of the victims of last Tuesday’s disaster on the White River in which seven young people drowned has brought forth no bodies. The work of dragging and blasting the river has been going on without abatement since the morning after the tragedy, and more than 50 men have been constantly at work.

May 24, 1958 PARAGOULD — Chancellor Lee Ward told supporters from throughout Northeast Arkansas here tonight that Gov. Faubus had picked Greene County as his No. 1 objective in the primary campaign and was prepared to pour in money to try to win it.
25 YEARS AGO
May 24, 1983 Eight persons who were arrested by Sheriff Tommy Robinson’s deputies in a raid on a “toga party” last year testified in federal court that the incident damaged their reputations, occupations and even their health. The 13, who were among the 23 persons arrested in the raid May 15, 1982, at the Hotel Sam Peck, filed the suit in November against Robinson and nine deputies.

May 24, 1998 Political consultants and political scientists differ on what will determine whether Blanche Lincoln or Winston Bryant wins the U. S. Senate runoff. “It’s going to be a personality vote,” said Anne Clemmer, a political science instructor who sees in the female candidate a frontrunner’s personality. Lincoln, said Clemmer, has youth and a “good ol’ girl image. She’s got the smile — what connects with voters.” Whoa ! That’s political consultant Jerry Russell of Little Rock jumping in to explain it would be dumb to count Bryant out. “He doesn’t inspire a lot of passion, but over the years he has inspired a lot of passive loyalty,” Russell said.
