The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will receive a $ 1. 97 million state grant for the fourth phase of the Drennen-Scott Home renovation.

The Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council announced the grant award Wednesday, UAFS officials said in a news release.

The renovation will support an academic program that officials believe is unique in the country, Chancellor Paul B. Beran said.

The campus will use the 1836 Drennen-Scott Home as a visitor center, museum and training facility for students in its historical interpretation program. Historical interpretation involves exhibit design, interpretive planning, caring for museum objects and learning to conduct tours and give presentations.

UAFS bought the Van Buren residence in 2005 from descendants of John Drennen and Charles Scott. It previously has received three grants totaling more than $ 2 million.

“This latest and final award will help us to complete the work we’ve started,” said Tom Wing, assistant professor of history and director of UAFS’ historical interpretation program.

The latest grant will cover restoration of the landscaping, exhibits, the building’s interior and a new parking area and site access. The council gets revenue from the state’s real estate transfer tax.
