Saturday, Clarion Inn, Bentonville Tree planting project set for Saturday Volunteers will plant hundreds of green ash and sycamore seedlings in the Illinois River watershed in Fayetteville, Rogers, Springdale and Siloam Springs from 8 a. m. to noon Saturday as part of the Illinois River Watershed Partnership’s Riparian Project. The riparian zone is the land next to a stream or lake where plant life acts as a buffer to trap and filter sediments, nutrients and chemicals from surface runoff and shallow groundwater. Tree roots within the riparian zone buffer and help stabilize stream banks, prevent erosion, slow water velocity and reduce the potential for flooding. Volunteers are needed to plant trees at Hamestring Creek in Fayetteville; Spring Creek in Springdale; Blossom Way Creek in Rogers; and Sager Creek in Siloam Springs. — ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Bill Medley headlines hospital gala Singer Bill Medley, formerly of the 1960 s group the Righteous Brothers, will headline the 15 th annual Washington Regional Foundation Gala set for 7: 30 p. m. Tuesday at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville. The gala marks the 20 th anniversary of the foundation. The 2008 Eagle Awards, given annually to individuals or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to the improvement of health-care services in Northwest Arkansas, will be awarded to Woody Bassett and Dr. Malcolm Hayward as part of the evening’s events. Tickets for the concert and accompanying reception cost $ 75. This year’s gala beneficiary is the Senior Specialty Unit at Washington Regional Medical Center. Hispanic council plans spring outing The Northwest Arkansas Hispanic Council will host its second spring family outing from noon to 4 p. m. April 5 at the Randall Tyson Sports Complex pavilion in Springdale. Activities include face painting, potato sack races, balloons and a soft ball tournament.
