100 YEARS AGO March 21, 1908 PERRYVILLE — The Perry County Board of Election Commissioners met here today and canvassed the vote of the recent county primary, certifying to the election of the successful candidates. It was found, upon a careful canvass of the votes, that Robert A. Neale was the nominee for representative, having received 374 votes. W. F. Pitts, to whom the nomination had practically been conceded, had but 373.

50 YEARS AGO March 21, 1958 PINE BLUFF — The Pine Bluff School Board delayed action on integration of its system until 1959 at a called meeting yesterday. The Pine Bluff plan would integrate schools beginning at the first grade level for 12 successive years. Reasons given for the delay were the events occurring within Arkansas and at Little Rock, where national guard troops are still on duty at Central High School.

25 YEARS AGO March 21, 1983 Tracy Webb of Batesville, a heady 5-9 senior guard, poured in 32 points and pulled down nine rebounds during the Pioneers’ 56-44 victory over Palestine to win the high school girls Over-all state championship.

10 YEARS AGO March 21, 1998 PINE BLUFF — The state may soon require its prisoners to give up smoking. A no-smoking proposal was one topic of discussion at a prison review committee meeting earlier this week at the new Scott Grimes Detention Facility in Newport. State Rep. Dennis Young, D-Texarkana, who proposed the smoking ban, said, “I just thought this is something we need to discuss. It makes for a cleaner unit and it’s good for the health of the inmate.”
