— ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Read Across America is Monday Holcomb Elementary School in Fayetteville will celebrate the National Education Association’s 10 th annual Read Across America on Monday. Community leaders including Fayetteville Mayor Dan Coody and state Sen. Sue Madison, D-Fayetteville, will be on hand to celebrate the event. Read Across America falls on what would have been Dr. Seuss’s 104 th birthday and the Cat in the Hat will be on hand. The Cat in the Hat will also be present for a celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday at 4 p. m. Monday at the Fayetteville Public Library, which will include readings of Dr. Seuss books, facepainting and birthday cake. Both events are intended to show children the importance and joy of reading.
— ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Iraq War protest planned Thursday The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville chapter of the Omni Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology will host a student protest of the Iraq War, “Drop Books, Not Bombs,” 10 a. m.-3 p. m. Thursday on the mall outside the Arkansas Union. Students and faculty members will voice their opinions about the war, and local musicians and speakers will be on hand. Omni student members will participate in a visual display of the war’s effects and costs. The public is invited to speak, sing or perform at the open mic event. Also planned is a demonstration, “Five Years Too Many: Bring Home the Troops Now,” to be held March 8 along College Avenue from Township Street to Dickson Street in Fayetteville. Protesters will meet in the Evelyn Hills Shopping Center parking lot at 12: 30 p. m. More information on both events is available at www. omnicenter. org.
