John Cummings, 43, of 1508 Hanger St. in Little Rock was arrested Sunday on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Calvin Broadway, 56.
One of Broadway’s friends found him slumped on his couch Wednesday afternoon, with blood covering his mouth and throat, in the garage apartment behind Broadway’s brother’s house at 618 E. 22 nd St.
Police initially thought Broadway had died of gastrointestinal bleeding. But during an autopsy Thursday, medical examiners found a bullet in Broadway’s body and discovered that he had been shot in the face.
Broadway’s brother, Eugene Ali, said that Cummings often visited Broadway at the apartment, sometimes staying overnight.
“He was always visiting him, back and forth all the time,” Ali said. “My brother was the one looking out for him.”
Ali said he didn’t know what led to the shooting. Little Rock police Sgt. Vicky Keathley said she had no information about a possible motive.
Cummings was arrested at 8 a. m. Sunday at 24 th and Scott streets. He was being held Sunday evening in the Pulaski County jail. Bail had not been set.
