ALMA — The Arkansas Highway Police seized 2, 300 pounds of marijuana Thursday during a routine safety inspection of an 18-wheeler, according to an Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department news release.

Inspectors noticed the cargo didn’t match the load manifest of socks. A search uncovered marijuana packed in cardboard boxes, department spokesman Ellen Hill said.

Trucker Earl Bailey, 55, of Etobicoke, Canada, is being held in the Crawford County jail on a $ 100, 000 bond pending a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, the Crawford County sheriff’s office reported.

The truck was en route from California to North Carolina, Hill said.

The truck was inspected through random selection.

The amount of marijuana was considered “significant,” Hill said, but not the largest in Arkansas. State police Troop H in Fort Smith seized 7, 400 pounds of marijuana in 2004.

“This is probably one of the top ones we’ve come across lately,” Hill said.

In March, 216 pounds of marijuana from California was seized in Crawford County. In February, 110 pounds of cocaine, also from California, was seized at the Alma weigh station.

In April 2006, the highway police seized 2, 318 pounds of marijuana at the weigh station.
